What are some of the challenges facing the industry in 2022, and what solutions do you offer?
The past two years have been trying for all of us and have presented numerous supply challenges to businesses worldwide, including the landscape industry. The inability to procure regularly used products in the past has challenged Roots to think ‘outside the box’ and even more creatively in order to provide effective landscape and hardscape solutions. Using alternative materials such as crushed stone, reclaimed bricks, and other hardscape materials has worked well for both Roots and our clients. In many cases, it has resulted in more uniquely luxe outdoor living spaces. Instead of installing concrete pavers for a walkway, for example, we sourced reclaimed brick or irregular flagstone with great results. We’ve also installed decomposed granite as a main patio or driveway medium, and instead of the traditional boxwood, we have opted for other plantings that thrive and complement a client’s garden for years to come. Delivering new and creative solutions has always been a positive and rewarding experience for our team and clients alike.
Why is now the best time to plan your spring landscape project?
Landscape projects take time to plan—more time than many homeowners realize. In the Northeast, winter can be cold, bitter, and snowy, and then suddenly…it’s SPRING! If you wait until the first bloom to start thinking about your spring landscape project, it can be tough competition to have your project scheduled in time for summer. Proper planning is important and involves discussing a client’s goals and developing a landscape design, a process that can take weeks. We can also apply for any required permits and obtain the necessary approvals during the winter months so that our clients are ready for spring. By using the winter months for spring landscape planning, our team can get to work on your project long before the snow melts.
What are some important factors to consider when planning your landscape?
At Roots Landscape, we believe in the importance of ‘Right Plant, Right Place.’ A particular shrub may thrive in a friend or neighbor’s garden, but struggle in yours. Our experts get to know your property by paying attention to it. What time of day does the sun hit your garden or lawn? And for how long? Are you dealing with steep slopes or poor drainage? Do you need a privacy screen or a tree removed? These are important considerations when planning your landscape. Thinking about if you’d like to attract butterflies and birds to your garden, or whether you need plants that are deer or rabbit resistant can make or break your landscape project. The more information you can share about your space, the better our team of horticulturists and landscape architects can design a unique garden that will thrive on your property.
